The Common Grounds Coffee House was started in the fall of 1997, by the outreach committee of Grace United Methodist Church. It’s purpose was to provide a smoke and alcohol free place to ” gather and fellowship with a cup of coffee”. The food came later, when it became apparent that the coffee alone wouldn’t pay our bills. The Coffee Shop soon developed into and Ecumenical Brew” when other church leaders and members of the community became interested in the project. Initial funding came from a grant from the Iowa Methodist Conference and individual donations. We went ahead mostly on faith and prayers. All our original equipment and furnishings were donated. We have since been able to purchase a stove ,freezers, microwave, dishwasher, disposal, chairs and floor covering. We are loosely governed by a board of directors coming from interested folks representing the whole community. We are staffed entirely by VOLUNTEERS. All profits are returned to the community. To date we have contributed more than $53,000 to worthwhile projects. One of our proudest accomplishments is the Gazebo Park next door. We started by acquiring the two adjoining lots & demolishing a dilapidated building. The results are evident. We hope you enjoy your time with us and will tell others about the Common Grounds Coffee House. We feel we are a good example of God at work.
